Classic Pilates—also known as True Pilates—is the Gold Standard of Pilates as taught by Joseph Pilates and his wife to protége Romana Kryzanowska. Those who teach this Classic or True method are Romana’s Pilates™ certified.

Mary Jo Shear, owner and trainer of Pilates Fundamentals, is certified in Romana’s Pilates™. She proudly brings this superior instruction to her studio in the Historic Millwork District of Dubuque, IA.

The goal of the Pilates method is to enhance strength, control, and flexibility while increasing one’s energy, fitness, and well-being. 

Pilates Fundamentals emphasizes MOVEMENT, FITNESS, and WELLNESS. Regularly practicing Pilates aids your body in many ways:  

  • Restore muscular balance
  • Build strength and flexibility
  • Increase coordination
  • Emphasize and improve body alignment and posture

The Pilates Method, developed by the legendary Joseph Pilates, is a sequence of more than 500 exercises performed on a mat and/or on specific exercise apparatus with the resistance of springs for strength and added support.  It uses the abdomen, lower back and buttocks – the “powerhouse” – to support the entire body through this series of movements.  Close attention to detail, sequence, alignment and control of each movement is emphasized and supervised by a certified instructor.

Unlike other exercise programs that isolate muscles, Pilates movement patterns work muscle groups with coordinated effort through their full range of motion as a total body conditioning.  Most of the exercises are done in a low weight-bearing position, so there is little or no impact on the joints.  Rather than adding more resistance or doing more repetitions, single movement patterns are made more complex as the client gains strength and control.  This workout program leaves a person feeling energized, relaxed, and focused.

Having been involved in the fitness industry in Chicago’s North Shore area for 30+ years as an A.C.E. certified trainer and instructor, Mary Jo Higley Shear has always had a passion for movement and fitness. In 1997, she was introduced to Pilates and became fascinated by its originator, Joseph Pilates and his work that he referred to as Contrology. After trying several forms of Pilates, it wasn’t until Mary Jo studied at the Pilates Connection in Evanston, IL that it all fell into place. There she found the missing link to her years of evolved study. Under the apprenticeship of Rhonda Celenza and Level 1 Instructor, Juanita Lopez, Mary Jo was finally able to experience the knowledge and legacy that Joseph Pilates passed on to his protégé and founder of Romana’s Pilates™, Romana Kryzanowska.
